Backstory

One of the fastest growing category on the short video format content providers these days is the Movie and/or Web Series clips which almost all age group people see during their social media surfing. In most cases people are not aware of the source of the clips. So they either ask their friends go to the search engine to find the source which many a times becomes a long process.

There comes this AI-powered idea of providing an in-app experience platform which facilitates the users to find the source of the clips without searching here and there for it.

The Problem

  • Users have to manually search on Google, often using vague keywords, which may not always yield accurate results.
  • Finding the source in comments is frustrating since they are cluttered, inconsistent, or sometimes completely missing.
  • Users lose engagement with the content they were watching because they get distracted while searching for the source.

Solution

An AI-powered in-built tool for the social media to get the source of the clips helping users don’t loose interest in the content.

Process

User Survey ––

Conducted a survey with some multiple choice questions like,

  • How many times do people encounter the movie or web series clips on a daily basis?
  • How do they find out the source if they find the clip interesting?

and a few more...

Collected a total of 48 responses.

Results from the survey were as below:

How Might We ––

How might we...

  • help users quickly identify the source movie or series of a short video they see on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts?
  • design an intuitive search experience that allows users to find relevant results with minimal effort?
  • ensure that users trust the accuracy and reliability of the search results?
  • create an engaging and delightful experience that keeps users coming back?

Design Goal...

Fast & Effortless Search

Enable users to upload a clip or paste a link and get results within seconds.

Highly Accurate Matching

Use AI or metadata to ensure that users receive precise and relevant matches.

Seamless User Experience

Ensure a smooth, frictionless flow with minimal steps to get results.

Engaging Visual Design

Present results in an appealing, easy-to-digest format with relevant details.

Result

Through this case study, I conceptualized an AI-powered tool that allows social media users to instantly identify the source of movie or web series clips found in short-form content. Key outcomes of this project include:

  • User-Centered Wireframes: Designed an intuitive product flow that minimizes user effort and provides instant results.
  • Clear Problem-Solution Fit: Validated the need for this tool through research, identifying common pain points in content discovery.
  • Scalable Concept: Explored potential integrations with social media platforms and streaming services to enhance user experience.

Learnings

  • Understanding User Frustrations: The research phase highlighted how time-consuming and fragmented the current search process is for users.
  • Balancing AI and Usability: While AI is the backbone of the idea, ensuring a seamless and minimalistic UX was crucial for adoption.
  • Potential for Future Development: The concept has the potential to evolve into a real product by leveraging AI-powered video recognition and metadata mapping.

Important! This kind of content heavy AI-tool needs to have a lot of heavy rendering which make it very expensive on the server side for the tool to work.

Major challenge is, this is video recognition. This needs to recognize scenes, characters, and even specific visual effects.

Apart from this, in the clip shared on the social platforms might have some filters and effects, different aspect ratios, combination of 2-3 different movies/series, audio variation, etc., which makes it even more complex to build such tool.
